Consider me outdated but I realize that most of the songs I write about are kinda stale...

Well, it's not that I have problem keeping up with the trend, it's just that sometimes one gets bored with current hits and I seek refuge in other song genres that are unheard of in Malaysia. And no I'm not talking about underground or indie bands though. I guess I'm more of an old soul in some ways...so I kinda enjoy country. Opps! Did I just say that country are meant for old people? No I don't mean that because I don't believe that. I mean now that Taylor Swift had won 4 Grammys, it's safe to say that country music isn't all boring.

It's been ages since I spent any time here. Well, I've been busy catching up with the "Supernatural" boys, Sam and Dean haha. So, ya I'm busy hunting supernatural stuff with them that I kinda neglected music for a bit. But I'll be back! See, I'm back already!

I was driving out with my bro to pump the car petrol yesterday when I heard the acoustic version of this song. 

Okay, hear me out! I'm not THAT outdated okay. I've known this song long time ago and I love it. I love Jay Sean's music. He makes everything sound beautiful. I've been a fan of his since his single "Stolen" and I'm so glad his back with not one, but multiple great tracks!!

So ya, I heard the acoustic version only yesterday but according to the bro, he has heard it many times and he's already sick of it. Show off or just to tell me how behind time I am.

WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO GET OLDER

The Chinese New Year is just around the corner and the tiger chasing out the ox signifies the greeting of a new year in the Chinese calendar. Unfortunately, the only obvious thing that one can deduce from a start of a new year is that we're getting OLDER. But every new year for me also brings chimes of reminders from the people around me; with many people telling me to mature, grow up (not physically because I'm already stunted) and stop being naive. I find it funny because it's a phase I'm going through. I'm maturing as I make all my stupid, idiotic mistakes.

They advise me to be wiser as I'm stepping into the corporate society, a world where nothing is that straightforward. Believe me, I tried but I'm sorry I'm slow and stupid. I really am. But I am trying to learn to be smarter and not making the same mistakes twice. Maybe I just need time to make sense of things...I might be slow but I could and will catch-up sooner or later (I hope).

I've completely forgotten about this song but hearing it again makes me realized the true meaning of this song because now I can relate to it better. Derived from Colbie Caillat's debut album, "Older" is the perfect song to describe my current transition in life.

In just a few sentences, the chorus has practically captured everything that has been  bugging my mind after I graduated from LJMU as a student and stepped into the threshold of adulthood.

As we grow, nothing seems straightforward. Nothing can be 100% right or 100% wrong. The lines are so blurred that sometimes you doubt if you had made the right choices or right decisions. If in primary school, we learn that lying is downright wrong, the world of adulthood makes you question if lying is actually wrong. I believe that there are circumstances in which lying is justifiable, but when is a lie justifiable? How do you distinct good and bad when sometimes, you need to play dirty for survival. It's a dog eat dog world out there they say (and I still haven't experience that yet, I don't know if it's a good thing). That's when you have to weigh and you keep thinking and thinking about it...that's when you feel that your shoulders are burdened with these dilemmas of life - with decisions.

I feel that I always knew my directions until I get here, it seems like I just can't find my way anymore. I'm still groping and hopefully I will see the light soon. One thing I've learned is that I can't take a shortcut and want things fast. I think I still need to work on patience. Some people reach their destinations sooner but I guess I'm not one of them lucky ones and so, I'll have to learn to bear with it =). But still it's all part of the progress of growing and getting older, ain't it?

Aging also means dealing with more decisions and challenges. It's about which road you take and where it will lead you to. That's again something that is bothering me and thinking about all these issues just make my brain circuits all jammed up. It's like you'll sometimes be wondering that if you did things the other way, what would the outcome be. Of course there are moments when you feel that you've made the best decisions out of the circumstance and you wouldn't have done things differently but there are also times when you just don't know, leaving yourself baffled with uncertainties of what are the true definitions of right and wrong decisions.

I've made some stupid career decisions very recently. Many argue that it is wrong...I guess somehow it is wrong but it felt so right that I have no regrets at all. I'm happier now and I'm ready for a new adventure. I know I won't get to my dreams any sooner but who knows right? God has always got a pathway paved. 

So well let's enjoy "Older" while we ponder upon life.

Nicole Johnson is a 14-year-old that is probably unheard of.

To me, all she need is a big break, someone to give her a chance to shine and do some good music.

She has recorded 2 songs, again, probably unheard of but both songs are beautiful songs that I feel need to be credited.

This one I'm introducing is especially meaningful and I wonder why it isn't as popular as I hope it would be. Perhaps lack of deserved publicity?

It's a country song and thus it won't really get much coverage in the local scene. In Malaysia, only huge country stars like Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood and maybe Shania Twain get some attention. Others are mostly shoved off. In fact, much to my dismay, the local radio stations blends the country sounds with the echoes of commercialized pop-rock (for example, Taylor's "Teardrops on my Guitar" and "Love Story"). I mean, come on!! You're destroying the melodies I actually love and replacing it with noise. No offense, but if you want pop-rock, play Simple Plan or something.

This is another meaningful song by Martina McBride. 

One the surface, she sings about how she is out there for the one she loves but that person wouldn't let her in. She wants to make a relationship work; and by that, it means opening up and communicating with each other. You know how it is, for a relationship to work, both parties have to be open and talk to each other. And when one shuts themselves, it will be hard. So basically I guess McBride is singing about how she's trying to hang on to a relationship, trying to make it work but her partner just isn't giving the necessary support because he is closing in to only himself.

But I would also argue that it's a song about you, yourself, standing up again because sometimes, when you feel so let down or disappointed, you lose the will to fight back and move on in life.

Your loved ones are always there for you, but they can only go so far as to help you because ultimately, it is only us who can bring ourselves back. Your family and friends are there to help you hang in there but if you just won't let them in, you are slowing shoving them away from your life.  

It's just another great track that I think country music fans would enjoy haha.

DO YOU WANT TO CRY ON MY SHOULDER?? - SORRY BUT IT'S RESERVED FOR V.I.P. ONLY =P

Since the Idol pandemic strikes again, I thought it would be apt for me to write about a particular Idol song which I happen to like haha. And this is no ordinary Idol song.

Now I'm pretty sure you  guys all know that the 'Idol' format is adopted in many different parts of the globe. This song I'm introducing is actually sung by the contestants on Deutschland Sucht den Superstar, which is a German singing competition based on the Idol format - something like "German Idol" in German haha. 

Anyway it is a really nice pop song - very commercialized sound but yes, I like it haha.

There are some really sweet memories etched within the melody of this song actually. Two years ago, one of my college friend introduced this song to my close friend and she fell in love with it. When I hear it, I knew why. YY is always fond of romantic songs and this one is a really nice one indeed. 

A whole bunch of us at that time were assignment mates (around 4 to 5 of us) and we shared this track among ourselves and it somehow became our song in some ways. We loved it so much that we inserted it into our short film for our final project. And at that time, it was kinda also like the romantic song for YY and all the guys who liked her (long story). 

Anyway, then after our final project, me and me classmates went for a Penang trip and I made sure that this song is on my playlist, since my gang is traveling with me in my car, I thought this would be the ultimate track to sing along. This was one of the songs that was repeating on my car's stereo when we were in Penang, thus, this song teleports me back to those great moments I had with my college buddies...Sigh...and that was swiftly 2 years ago. Time really flies.

SHE MISSES HIM

I am pretty certain that not many would have come across this song because it is a low profile country song. But it is a brilliant, brilliant song that I love so so much.

It reminds me a lot about my grandfather, whom I dearly love. The lyrics describe my grandmother and my grandfather, especially during the period when my grandfather was very ill. My grandpa suffered from stroke a couple of times and had Alzheimer due to old age and the last few years of his life, he was somewhat blurred with stuff that is going on. I don't really know what is on his mind then, but I just wish I knew. The last few months before his passing away, he was stricken with blood cancer and all I knew is that he still had to suffer during those last few months of his life.

And this song I think just describes how all of us feel about this man, whom I call my grandfather, my father's dad...

My grandpa was a really kind and responsible man. I've heard my parents talked about how great and nice my grandpa was, how he sacrifice and worked hard to raise his children and provide for his family. I think in many ways my dad had inherited this quality from my grandpa. Grandma told us that they were poor but very very happy at that time. I think as much as I want to say I know how that feels, I don't think I know. I mean, I'm happy now but I never really been in extreme poverty where I had to starve or anything and I think in many ways, I've never had to feel how it's like to have nothing and everything. But then again, I'm not super rich so I do know how to feel contented. 

Anyway the first verse of the song has given a similar picture of how my grandma spent her time with my grandpa for the past few years before his death. My grandma cooks for him, well basically attending to his every needs.

The chorus basically reminds me of who my grandpa is and will always be to me and I believe, to all of us who had loved him so dearly.

My siblings and I are probably the closest to our grandpa since when we were young, we see grandpa everyday (he used to help out with our family laundry business). He drove us to school and all. I can say, that was perhaps the best days of our lives...we were young, we were happy...all I had to think about is school and how to not do homework...grandpa was there with us. He loves us and buys us stuffs and toys and takes us places. Those were really the good old days. It seems really surreal to me now that those are just childhood memories that I'll never relive. As much as I love being a young adult, I guess I kinda hate the responsibilities that come with being an adult (who doesn't?) and I so wish that I could just go back to those days where I can hang out with grandpa.

One of two of my cousins however didn't really got the chance to know my grandpa like we do. Mainly because they were still very young. I guess  some of them will just remember grandpa as he is in the hospital...For us older ones, we'll remember him as a great grandpa...a man who I love so dearly. For my father and aunts, they'll see grandpa as a great father and for my grandmother, a man she had loved all her life. But whatever it is, my grandpa is a great man. Is...because he still is, wherever he is now.

It still seems like it's just yesterday my grandpa left us because he is still so firmly in my memory. I still constantly think about him. I even had a couple of dreams about him.

I suddenly thought about him and also this song because come March will be the "Qing Bing" festival (a Chinese festival where we sort of like pray for the dead or something) and my mum was telling me about visiting grandpa and all.

If you miss your grandpa just like I do, you'll definitely love this song even more because you'll be able to feel the song personally. But if you still have your grandpa or in fact, anyone you love dearly, treasure them....

WHAT IF GOD IS ONE OF US?

"What if God was one of us?

Have you ever ask this question? I guess I've never really ask the question until I heard a song recommended to me by a friend ages ago...I think could be 3 years back.

It used to be one of my favourite songs on my playlist but after awhile, it somehow got kicked out of the list. But yesterday, while watching the latest season of American Idol, a contestant actually brought back the memories of this song and boy, the contestant actually did an even better interpretation of the song. His name is Jermaine Sellers. His rendition was beautiful and suddenly, I thought of this song...and now I'm reliving it... I guess not just the song but also the memory of how I got to know this friend who shared this tune with me. We barely knew each other last time when we first talked about music and now, he's kinda like part of the gang.

Anyway, on the surface, this is a beautiful song that is written about the question, "what if God is actually one of us?" Like I said, I never wonder myself. In some ways, I don't doubt the existence of God but I never really thought about what I'll ask or say if God is actually one of us.

But I guess if we delve deeper within the chorus, I'd interpret the lyrics a bit differently too. I guess it is just reminding us that perhaps that someone we look up to (here using 'God' metaphorically) is actually a normal human like us too. So, there's no need really to feel insecure or not good enough.

Besides I think the song is also about flaws, that everyone has flaws. I believe in Christianity, one is not allowed to say that God has flaws (I'm not Christian though so I'm on the fence on this), but, but, what if our God or Gods have their flaws, just like us? It'll be interesting too.

Different people have different interpretation of their own God. I mean, in Islam, Allah (can I use this word?) is God. In Buddhism and Taoism, we have multiple Chinese Gods haha (for example, I always picture the God Er Lang as the hot dude...ahem excuse my fascination with hot Gods) and then we also have the God of Prosperity, Sun WuKong (the Monkey God??) etc. etc.

So what I'm saying is, who we define God is so different, depending on our beliefs. I mean, for all that I know, one could think that their mother is God for so capable in life, for example.

Okay, in summary, I'm saying that again, God is who we define as our God and sometimes  it could also metaphorically be someone that we respect and have a great admiration for because of his/her abilities.

Therefore, I'm saying that this song subtly suggests that, you know, everyone has problems, has their weaknesses, flaws, good and bad...ups and downs, perhaps even God.

Second verse is interesting...

I think the words highlights that sometimes, faith in God is not really something visible.

Some people don't believe in God I guess because they don't see it, so perhaps if God had a face, we would believe. In the end, I'll interpret the lines as, you see God as you wish to see Him. And once you choose to see or feel, you are believing.

Personally, I choose to believe that God is greater and mightier than us but I do believe that being God is not easy. That is why, you know, in other words, God could be like one of us, though He might face different challenges.

It's a brilliant song. I don't know if you agree with my personal interpretation of the song but whatever it is, I think this song is somehow really meaningfully written...

Nothing can compare to the original itself for sure. This is Joan Osborne singing "One of Us".
Simple video, capturing just normal people and the 'what if God is one of us' theme basically.

Digby sounded good here, though she's just singing the song. But I like her accompanying her vocals with the piano. She no doubt has a beautiful voice that harmonizes the piano playing. It is definitely something different from the "folk-rock" kinda style employed in the original song by Joan Osborne herself.

With such a melodic voice & smooth R&B version, how can he not be through to the next round? Even Simon was impressed.

I love the mood that they song adds into the picture...

It made feel calm as the song kinda lifted me up (though not physically lar), as if I'm flying along the serene landscapes featured on the big screen.

If you have NOOOOOOOO idea what I'm talking about among that whole load of crap....so sorry. Actually I was talking about the song that was featured at the end of Avatar; the one that accompanied the rolling credits.

I promised myself to look for that song once I'm out of the cinema. But two weeks after that I still haven't make the effort to search for the song. But but but...the other day at my cousin's house while watching MTV, this song just introduces itself to me muahaha.

I was like "OMG! It's Leona Lewis!"...

I think I was meaning to say "OMG! It's Leona Lewis who sang the song from Avatar. Wicked~ (British expression for super kewl!)". God, how can I not know. With that beautiful voice. My cousin said she thought it was Celine Dion who sang the song. But I think Celine Dion has a more distinctive voice which I can recognize so I know it's not Celine.

Anyway I think it's brilliant to get Leona Lewis to sing Avatar's theme song. It makes perfect sense. She is like one of the biggest star with an amazing voice...following the footsteps of great artistes like Celine and Whitney but she's like the new modern edition...perfectly capturing what Avatar is for James Cameron - a modern movie of what would be a classic like Titanic. I love this song. It's mainly above love and this song brilliantly encapsulates the love between Jake and Neytiri in the movie Avatar into its melodic lines.
